Go Take a Hike - Bartram's Ixia
Head outside for a stroll along the banks of the St. Johns River or one of it's tributaries. While we are enjoying the outdoors, we will talk about the history, ecology, and issues facing our St. Johns River.
In May, St. Johns Riverkeeper has partnered with Ixia Chapter of Florida Native Plant Society and Living Historian William Bartram to hunt for Bartram's Ixia. Learn about why this plant is endangered, the importance of controlled burns for it to bloom, and how conserving wild spaces such as Julington Durbin Creek Nature Preserve is vital for the survival of endemic plants and animals. Meet William Bartram, the first person to document the Ixia flower and for whom it was named. Listen to stories of his Travels along the St. Johns River and see examples of animals he encountered along the way. Participate in a scavenger hunt during the hike to discover other cool plants and animals at the Preserve and highlight which ones are native and invasive.
