Mad for Manatees at Blue Spring
Go behind the scenes with Save the Manatee Club during the manatee's annual wintering season at Blue Spring (December- March). In the winter months, manatees retreat from the main-stem of the St. Johns to our River's warmer springs, which maintain a constant water temperature of 72 degrees. Still chilly for us, but a "hot tub" for these gentle giants!
We'll start our trip to Blue Spring by boat with Blue Heron River Tours and updates from St. Johns Riverkeeper staff as we cruise to Blue Spring State Park. Once there, we'll updates on land from Save the Manatee staff on current research at Blue Spring, point out individual manatees as we walk along the boardwalk and up to the spring head. Note: It's always hard to predict how many manatees will be present at Blue Spring as it depends on the weather and temperatures. We'll end the program with our boat trip back to where we started - maybe spotting a manatee or two and other important wildlife, and talking about the local ecology of the River and St. Johns Riverkeeper's work to protect it.
